Sv. Jure is the highest peak of Biokovo and the second highest peak in the Republic of Croatia. This stone peak with a small plateau is home to a large building of the TV and telecommunication transmission facility in an enclosed area. The peak point itself, marked with a geodetic pillar, is in this enclosed area, and therefore not accessible to hikers. Outside of the fenced area, there is the picturesque chapel of St. George.
View: The peak offers a remarkable view of the Biokovo plateau and its numerous sinkholes. In good weather, visitors to the peak can also see the field of Imotsko polje and the contours of the Apennines across the sea in Italy.
Seal: Metal seal is built into the rock on the left side, next to the trail leading from the parking lot towards the chapel of St. George, approximately ten meters southwest of the chapel.
Directions
Approaches:
- Milići – Sv. Jure 4 h
- Turija – Ljubović – Sv. Jure 4 h
- Makarska – Štropac (mountain pass below Vošac) – Sv. Jure 5.45 h
Due to the height of the peak, all hiking approaches from the base of the mountain of Biokovo to Sv. Jure are long and hard. Hikers departing from Makarska should use the traditional route via Štropac that leads first to Vošac, and then in a slightly gentler climb to the peak of Sv. Jure. On the continental side, the best route is the climb from Turija (from the tunnel). Most visitors (including tourists) reach the peak of Sv. Jure by car along the Biokovo Road. The road is very narrow, steep and hard to drive on. Hikers on Biokovo visiting Sv. Jure, and staying overnight, can use the mountain hut Pod Sv. Jurom, mountain lodge Vošac slightly further away, and mountain hut Slobodan Ravlić in the area of Lokva (all these facilities are checkpoints of the hiking tour Croatian Mountain Huts).
Important!
St George peak is the one of rare locations where you can see endemic flower Biokovsko zvonce (silvery dwarf harebell/Edraianthus pumilio)
